Stevia extract

Stevia, also known as stevioside, is a glycoside extracted from the leaves of the stevia plant of the Asteraceae family. The sweetness of stevia is 200-300 times that of sucrose, and the calorific value is only 1/300 of that of sucrose.

What is Stevia Powder?
Stevia is a new natural sweetener extracted from the herbaceous plant Stevia (or Stevia leaf) of the Asteraceae family. South America has used Stevia as a medicinal herb and sugar substitute for hundreds of years. It is a safe sweetener and has appeared frequently in the process of human evolution. Unlike sugar alcohols, the sweetness of Stevia is 200-300 times that of sucrose, but the calorific value is only 1/300 of that of sucrose. This is a reasonable sweetener product.

How safe is stevia?
People have always had doubts about the safety of sugar substitutes. In 2023, researchers at the Cleveland Clinic questioned erythritol. Although it was later pointed out that the direct relationship between erythritol and heart disease could not be confirmed, it also raised questions about the so-called "natural and healthy" concept of sugar substitutes. The Joyous team firmly believes that sugar substitutes are products that will definitely appear in this era of energy surplus, but they are definitely not the safest. There is no such thing as a completely harmless product, so there is a need for dosage requirements, and the so-called 0 sugar and 0 calories of sugar substitutes do not exist, but only the difference between more and less. For example, stevia, Joyous believes that even 1/300 of the calories are calories, and stevia is one of the safest sweeteners we think, on par with monk fruit extract.
Data shows that stevia is mainly used as a sweetener in Asian countries and regions such as China, Japan, and South Korea, as well as Brazil, where it originates. Before the ban on the use of stevia in Singapore, Hong Kong, China, and Macau, China, many countries such as the United States and the European Union have always excluded stevia from food additives. In the past 10 years, the US FDA has rejected applications to use stevioside as a food additive three times, believing that its safety has not been fully proven. As early as June 1985, the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China approved the use of stevioside as a new food additive in Document No. 37 (85) of June 5, 1985. The "Catalogue of Existing Additives" published by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan on May 23, 1996, No. 56, included four different types of stevioside for food use, stating that stevioside has passed multiple tests in terms of safety, from mutagenicity tests to chronic toxicity tests and carcinogenicity tests. In a 1999 report on the safety evaluation of stevioside, the European Food Science Committee mentioned that the acute toxicity, subtoxicity, chronic toxicity and carcinogenicity of stevioside itself are not strong, but it may affect male fertility. At the same time, the main metabolite stevio shows mutagenic activity, produces toxicity at high concentrations, and is suspected to have carcinogenicity, but relevant research is not sufficient. The report concluded that due to the scientific questionability of chronic toxicity and carcinogenicity studies, and the possible impact of stevioside on male fertility, especially the toxicity of its metabolite stevioside, it is not allowed to be marketed without further data.
FAO/WHO joint experts examined stevioside in 1998 and believed that it was impossible to formulate an acceptable daily intake of stevioside based on the existing data.
It was not until 2011 that the European Commission authorized the use of stevioside in food and beverages. In 2021, the safety of stevia ingredients passed the EFSA assessment. In July 2021, the European Commission amended Regulation (EC) No 01333/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council and Regulation (EU) No 231/2012 of the Commission to allow the use of rebaudioside produced by enzymatic biotransformation as a food sweetener. In order to distinguish steviol glycosides from different sources, the regulation also revised "stevioside" (E960) to "stevioside from stevia" (E960a) and "stevioside from enzymatic production" (E960c).
Also in 2008, the FDA's GRAS certification proved the safety of stevia, including purified steviol glycosides with rebaudioside A as the main ingredient, rebaudioside A, rebaudioside B, rebaudioside C, rebaudioside D, rebaudioside E, rebaudioside M, and rebaudioside I. Rebaudioside M produced by enzymatic and biological fermentation methods is also approved for use. In August 2017, the Canadian Ministry of Health issued the "List of Sweeteners Allowed for Use", approving the use of steviol glycosides from stevia in 9 types of food, including table sweeteners, breakfast cereals, beverages, baked goods, chewing gum, etc.
We cannot say that stevia is completely harmless, but it is indeed beneficial for diabetes, and its harmfulness may be small enough. And unlike the chemical process of some sugar alcohols, our stevia is made entirely by plant extraction. In the minds of the Joyous team, this is what a sugar substitute should look like.
