HMB is naturally produced from leucine in animals and humans, and only about 5% of leucine is converted into HMB. Analysis of intake of β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate calcium ：
As a dietary supplement, HMB is marketed as a calcium monohydrate salt with the experimental formula Ca (HMB)2-H2O (HMB-Ca). The size and speed at which HMB appears after ingestion depends on the dose and whether it is taken with other nutrients. Specifically, Vukovich et al. found that HMB levels in the blood reached a peak two hours after ingesting 1 g HMB-Ca; while HMB levels in the blood reached a peak 60 minutes after ingesting 3 g HMB-Ca, and plasma concentrations increased by 300% ( 487 vs. 120 nmol·ml-1), and urinary losses were greater (28% vs. 14%), 3 vs. 1 g HMB-Ca, respectively. When the HMB-Ca dose was combined with 75 g of glucose, the peak concentration of HMB was also delayed by one hour and significantly reduced (352 nmol·ml-1). It may be that the addition of glucose slows gastric emptying, or reduces HMB.
