What is the role of Mandelic acid?
Mandelic acid is a large molecular weight fruit acid, usually derived from bitter almonds. Mandelic acid is lipophilic. Compared with the common fruit acid-glycolic acid, mandelic acid has certain antibacterial ability. At the same time, compared with common glycolic acid and lactic acid, its penetration rate into Chemicalbook skin will be slower, which means that it is less irritating than glycolic acid. Its fat solubility is increased and the ability of stratum corneum to penetrate the skin is improved. Like glycolic acid and lactic acid, mandelic acid also has a certain whitening effect.
Production method of mandelic acid:
1. Use acetophenone, a by-product of cumene production of phenol, as raw material, chlorine it to obtain dichloroacetophenone, then react with dilute alkali and hydrolyze it to obtain mandelic acid.
2. Use benzaldehyde as raw material. Dissolve sodium cyanide in water, add benzaldehyde, and slowly add the saturated solution of sodium bisulfite while stirring. When the addition is half done, add crushed ice and separate the precipitated phenylhydroxyacetonitrile layer from the water layer. The water layer was extracted with benzene, and the benzene was evaporated. The Chemicalbook residue was combined with the phenylhydroxyacetonitrile layer, hydrochloric acid was added, and hydrolysis was carried out under cooling for 12 hours. Then heat to remove excess water and hydrochloric acid, cool, and filter out the mixture of ammonium chloride and mandelic acid. The filtrate was evaporated to dryness, and the residue was combined with the above solid and washed with cold benzene. It is then extracted with hot benzene, and the extract is cooled, crystallized, filtered, and dried to obtain mandelic acid with a yield of 50-52%.
3. Benzene-glyoxylic acid method, add sulfuric acid dropwise with 50% glycolic acid, benzene and acetic acid under stirring. After reacting at 80°C, separate the benzene layer and the water layer, and add 5% sodium hydroxide aqueous solution to the benzene layer. Make the pH value of the separated aqueous layer 8. After separating the benzene layer and the water layer, add 50% sulfuric acid to the water layer to bring the pH to 5 to precipitate. Filter, concentrate the filtrate, add 50% sulfuric acid to bring the pH to 1, filter the precipitate, wash with water, and dry to obtain the product.
When used in medicine, mandelic acid can be used as an intermediate for cefadroxyzole, vasodilator cyclomandelate, eye drops oxybenzole, pemoline, etc.
Mandelic acid is also used as a preservative (in urine). It has also been used as a short-term exposure biomarker in the urine of styrene-exposed workers.
Mandelic acid can also be used as a special reagent for zirconium, determination of copper, organic synthesis of some chemicals, and some fungicides.
